Free Range Friday!

We've got a couple of radio stations in our area that drag out the "holiday music" on the first of November. *shudder*

Mind you, I do like Christmas carols and various other non-secular-type December music. Hit me with Grandma getting run over by a reindeer on November first? I'll yank the radio out of the dash and hurl it into traffic.

Now that we're well and truly into December, I'm ready to embrace the festivities. Especially my Aunt Trudy's rum balls. Note to self: do NOT attempt to light a menorah whilst under the influence of rum balls.

Heck, I didn't need that eyebrow anyway...

Speaking of things that burn, here's a fun way to decorate your walkway this year. Get some tin cans, preferably the big ones. You know, like the family-sized green beans or something. Wash the cans and file down any sharp edges, then fill them with wet sand and stick 'em in the freezer.

That's not the fun part. Bear with me.

Once the sand is frozen, draw a simple design on the side of the can. Now comes the fun part. Using a hammer and a nail, pound little holes along the lines of your drawing. This is why we're using frozen sand, to keep the can in good shape. Clever, eh?

Dump out the sand, drop in a votive candle (soy, if you're being all environmental and stuff), and wow your neighbors. You probably don't want to use these indoors, being metal. And leaky. And on fire.

But they look nice lining your sidewalk!

  1. That's actually a really great decoration idea, but I wanted to comment quickly on the "early Christmas song" subject.

Now, I realize that not everyone -- or "mostly no one" -- sees the world the way I do, but I really think any holiday song before Thanksgiving is waaaaay too early. The first of Novemember? They should make that illegal!

That being said, I enjoy most Christmas tunes... as long as they are kept in the right season.

(I'm going to have "Grandma Got Run Over..." stuck in my head the rest of the day!!) :)

  2. j.m. -- Definitely gotta keep 'em in season! Oh, and if you sing "Amazing Grace" to the tune of the Gilligan's Island theme song, it'll kill any earworm that's bugging you. ;)

  3. BWA-HA-HA-HA-HAAAAAAAAA! I'll have to remember that one, Miss Bard.

Love the craft idea, and I SO understand the dangers of working under the influence. ~grin~

  4. That's better than using paper bags which could catch on fire - and potentially ruin a perfectly good Christmas season.

  5. Thanks for the great decorating idea! And definitely watch out for your aunt's rum balls. They sound deadly.
